I'm shocked your memory is so skewed because Genshin was and continues to be a huge breath of fresh air for mobile gamers and it got a lot of praise for that and it was warranted. Their monetization isn't remotely the same besides the battle pass which every fucking game has now anyways. Yeah it's fucking overpriced but the last thing Genshin does is actively try to sell you shit at every turn with actual notifications WHILE YOU'RE PLAYING, in fact it doesn't even do it at all. There is no PvP, no leaderboards, they don't spam you with bundles and deals. You don't need every constellation and maxed BiS weapons to play the entirety and enjoy the game. Genshin impact has some pretty gross monetization and I'm arguing that the media's favorable coverage of Genshin likely encouraged Diablo immortal to try similar strategies. This is about the media's inconsistency when covering both games. This post isn't about which game is worse or which one is more "F2P friendly" And it generally received praise from the same outlets that are condemning Diablo.Īs recently as two months ago, outlets such as Forbes, Kotaku, Game Rant, and even BBC news had posted articles, congratulating Genshin for bringing in $1 billion every 6 months from micro transactions.īut now that Diablo immortal has decided to copy Genshin's monetization strategy (almost to the letter, but with even more aggression), these same outlets have been fierce with their condemnation, without acknowledging that their favorable coverage of Genshin has been signaling that this sort of monetization is acceptable.Īnd I just think that's a bit silly, if not hypocritical.Įdit: I just want to clarify because people seem to be getting lost. When it launched, Genshin Impact was the most aggressively monetized game to become mainstream in the west. I am of the opinion that Genshin impact paved the way for Diablo Immortal.
